About Digital Sovereignty

Q: What does “Digital Sovereignty” actually mean?

A: It’s the right of Indigenous peoples to shape our digital futures — from code to culture. Think of it as: our data, our stories, our design, our rules.

Q: Why does this matter?

A: Because technology isn’t neutral. For too long, tech has erased or exploited Native voices. Digital sovereignty flips the script — putting Native power and presence at the center of innovation.

Q: Who’s behind the Digital Sovereignty Project?

A: We’re Native-led, Indigenous-powered, and community-driven. Allies are welcome, but the direction comes from us.

Programs & Work aka What We Do

Q: So…what do you actually do?

A: We create resources, campaigns, creative tools, and workshops that make space for Native voices in digital culture. From quick-hit educator guides to art-for-advocacy campaigns, we’re building tools that shift the narrative.

Q: Is it just about tech?

A: Tech is the foundation, but our work spans storytelling, media, education, and culture. Because digital futures aren’t separate from daily life — they’re woven into everything.

Q: What makes DSP different from other orgs?

A: We don’t copy Silicon Valley. We remix Native knowledge with digital creativity. It’s community-centered, future-forward, and unapologetically Native.

Participation & Support aka Getting Involved

Q: Do I have to be Native to participate?

A: Nope. Everyone is welcome — as long as you respect Indigenous sovereignty and show up with real accountability (not savior vibes).

Q: How can I support the work?

A: Share our content, use our guides, collaborate on projects, or support through donations. Whatever your lane is — you’ve got power. Use it.

Q: Can my school, org, or brand partner with DSP?

A: Yes. We love working with educators, creatives, technologists, and community orgs who share our vision. Let’s build together.

Education & Resources

Q: Do you offer resources for educators?

A: Yes! We make free downloadable guides, posters, and toolkits designed for classrooms and community spaces.

Q: Where can I learn more about Indigenous tech + data sovereignty?

A: Check out our Knowledge Base — a growing collection of quick reads, deep dives, and community-made wisdom.

Q: Do you host events or workshops?

A: Sometimes! From panels to trainings, we pop up online and in person. Follow us for announcements.

Practical Questions aka Nuts & Bolts

Q: Are you a nonprofit?

A: We’re are currently structuring as a nonprofit (which means your support goes straight into building resources, powering projects, and uplifting Native creators). But please check this again in a few weeks and we should be able to add a hearty "YES!" here.

Q: How do you use donations?

A: Simple: every dollar fuels Native-led creativity, education, and digital sovereignty work. No fluff. No corporate bloat. We invite you to check our tax return forms for full transparency.

Q: Where are you based?

A: Our roots are in Native communities. Our reach is digital, so our work is everywhere. But to get technical, we were founded on Menominee land in Michigan.
